WHAT IS A
Poodle?
AND WHY DO WE CHOOSE TO BREED THEM?
What is a Poodle? A Poodle is a loyal, loving, kind, beautiful, bouncy, blissful soul that only wants to give you all of their love every single day. They are beyond intelligent, family oriented and will excel at any task asked of them.
The Poodle originated in Germany. The breed name comes from the German word “pudel” or “pudelin,” which means “to splash in the water.” Appropriate don't you think, as these elegant, proud, clever dogs were originally bred to be water retrievers. They were trained to bring ducks and other birds back to their masters.
Behind the impressive hairdos and regal attitudes you will find one of the most affectionate family dogs with many talents. Poodles are regarded as one of the most intelligent breeds in the world. They are highly trainable and well suited for just about any task you put them to, but because they are such an intelligent breed they can get bored. Bored poodles can become destructive if they aren’t physically and mentally stimulated. Keeping them active and meeting their needs will ensure you have a loving, smart, trainable, and loyal family companion.
Poodles come in three sizes; toy, miniature and standard. With there being such a range in the standard size you may see us refer to some of our smaller standards as "moyen", which is fourth size recognized in Europe. A moyen is between a mini and standard in size.
Toy Poodle 10 inches tall and weighs 6 - 9 lbs
Miniature Poodle 11 - 15 inches tall and weighs 10 - 20 lbs
Moyen Poodle 15 - 19 inches and weighs 20 - 35 lbs
Standard Poodle 19 - 26 inches and weights 40 -70 lbs
The Lifespan of a Poodle is 12-15 years, but many have lived much longer into their 20's. The record is 28 years, how amazing would it be to have your baby for 28 years? This is our goal! Poodles are generally healthy, but like all breeds, they’re prone to certain health conditions. This is why we focus our program on health testing. We want to produce family members that are going to live long healthy lives with their families. We test and even cross test with multiple companies to ensure we have all the information we need when selecting our pairings. We complete hip, elbow, patella and cardiac evaluations with the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) NOT just a vet check. Our dogs are given anesthesia and sedated for xrays that are sent to professionals to evaluate and grade our parent dogs joints. We do this to ensure we are producing quality, healthy dogs with ZERO genetic predisposition to hip dysplasia.
Poodles have a dense, curly, single-layer coat that can come in various colors. Poodles do not have fur, but instead they have hair quite similar to ours. They require regular maintenance and grooming, generally a minimum of brushing 2-3 times a week and hair cuts every 5-6 weeks. Yes this may seem high maintenance, yes this may sound expensive, and YES it is. Please do research on the breed, ensure you have the time and ability for the upkeep as well as the funds for grooming or time to learn how to groom your baby. Grooming is not an option with this breed, it is a requirement.
The Poodle can, will and does serve as a protector of their home and family. Although they are affectionate with their family, they may take a while to warm up to new people. This is why early proper socialization is very important with Poodles. Our program puts a huge focus on early desensitization with our puppies, we hope to prepare them for the many life experiences to come. When they leave us there is still so much for them to learn and see, it is beyond important to make sure they experience the world from a young age to better develop their social skills.
Just remember they learn fast — good habits and bad — and they remember everything.
